2 sided hand painted Brise Fan made of very thin pieces of natural wood with a large black bird in flight on one side and white, orchid and yellow flowers w/green leaves in the center on the reverse side. Varnished wood guards, ribs and guards carved in a wavy pattern along the bottom edges, increasing in width and at the top are rounded. 1/4” of purple ribbon is woven through each rib connecting them along the top.

The guards extend down a few inches below the fan creating a handle on each side, the two handles held together w/a metal clip that snaps in place over the guards. Wood guards covered w/black leather. Metal center hinge stamped “Pat Feb 8, 1881.”

Black feather brise fan, feathers get larger as they come to the center and then curve down along the top creating a dome shape. Fan decorated in floral motif with three hand painted birds. Sticks and guards in walnut color with a glossy finish. Light green ribbon woven through the sticks to keep them rigid, black tassel.

Made in Japan. 30 3” rectangular pieces of paper painted with a blue butterfly along the top, pink rose in the center and a spray of lilac flowers along the bottom. Black wood sticks and guards carved in a series of ovals with floral design. The top of each stick has 15 of the center sticks have an overlay of tiny wood sections that are carved to create a boat, with a man and woman standing on each side wearing kimonos. Boat and figures in blue, gray and black.

In black silhouette is a formally dressed lady and gentleman of the 1800s with touches of red and pink flowers. Appears to be hand painted. Sticks connected just above the silhouette with interlaced cream ribbon. Ring stamped “Germany.” Petite size.

Large feather fan with, a small rectangular center section without feathers. In place of feathers is a painted scene. Red feathers with faux tortoise carved sticks and guards. In the center of the leaf is a small section of cream satin with a painted scene of two women listening to a young man playing a string instrument. In shades of green, blue and rose. The back of the fan is red linen fabric.

The bottom 1/3 of the fan has has natural feathers in shades of brown and white, back side has 3 peacock feathers set under the brown feathers extending up towards the top of the fan. Where feathers connect with the handle there is decorative round green and brown ribbon flower. DATE: Mid 1800s.

Souvenir Holiday Fan
Souvenir Holiday Fan w/4 hand drawn black ink sketches on an off white paper fan with a satiny fabric backing. Ladies would take the fan on holidays and artists would sketch a picture, usually of something reminiscent of the locale they travelled to and then sign and date it. The fan then became a souvenir of the lady’s travels. Each of sketches on this fan are signed and dated 01, 02, 03 and 10 (1900). White painted wood sticks and guard, 19” expansion.

a. 12 carved wood sticks along the bottom third have an open work design. The sticks then extend up to the top of the fan in a different open work pattern with the fabric glued to the back of the sticks showing through. Brass rivet loops.
b. Brise fan with 13 fabric pieces in shape resembling feathers attached to the carved wood sticks. The carved wood guard has an etched leaf design.
