Cardui Tonic Booklet The Ladies Birthday Almanac, Thedfordʼs Black Draught 1929 Cardui Tonic, 33 page advertising and informational booklet, tan with black writing advertising “Thedfordʼs Black-Draught” and “Cardui a Tonic, 1929,” company logo in the center with a sketch of a knelling Native American woman pointing at the leaves of a plant as a pioneer woman stands observing. Booklet includes product testimonials, each with a sketch of the woman writing and the state she lives in. Every month has a page with a detailed weather forecast. Bottom of cover page says, “Our Medicines are the Product of Practical Experience, Scientific Investigation and Pharmaceutical Skill.” The back page says “When Weak Take Cardui, in use over 50 years.” Herema Drugstore, Indianola, Iowa, Drugs and Medicines, Prescriptions. In 1880, a menstrual relief product called Dr. McELREE'S Wine of Cardui was introduced. Cardui was composed chiefly of 51.9% potassium carbonate, 16% salt, and 20.3% alcohol, the advertising suggesting that the product was herbal. DATED: 1929.
