Printed at the bottom is “Home Legion,” around the edge says, “Presented for Distinguished Service.” Betty Crocker was a fictional advertising person created in 1921 as a way to give personalized responses to consumer product questions about cooking. During the Second World War, General Mills started the Betty Crocker Home Legion, which encouraged women to keep the home fires burning. “I believe homemaking requires the best of my efforts, my abilities and my thinking,” read a Betty-signed screed sent to their members members.
